George Karl has been on the Kings' coaching radar for weeks now, but the team has stepped up its pursuit of the veteran coach.

Multiple sources have reportedly told the Sacramento Bee that the team is conducting “intense conversations” with Karl. The reeling Kings are 6-18 under interim coach Tyrone Corbin, who took over the team in mid-December following the firing of coach Michael Malone. At the time, league insiders expected the Kings to pursue Karl in the offseason, but a midseason move seemed unlikely.

The 63-year-old Karl last coached in the NBA with the Nuggets during the 2012-13 season. His 1,131 regular season NBA wins rank sixth all-time.

Landing Kar

l is not a done deal, the Bee reports. The first sticking point is his salary, expected to be in the $4 million-plus range; the Kings are still on the hook for Malone's salary through next season. Team officials are also wary of how Karl would get along with star center DeMarcus Cousins.

But if the Kings wait, they may have to contend with other teams who are likely to chase Karl in the offseason.
